Cat dropped in scalding hot water

By: Jamel Valencia
LAS CRUCES, Texas - A Las Cruces man is being held in jail for allegedly dunking his girlfriend's cat into hot water.

The cat's injuries were severe to the point where its fur and skin began to fall off.

Mathew J. Montes, 25, is accused of taking his girlfriend's 6-month-old kitten, Lulu, and immersing it in scalding hot water and then strangling it.

Montes' girlfriend told detectives the incident happened on Oct. 10. She said she came home and found her kitten unable to walk and isolating herself in her litter box. Detectives said that she told them Montes admitted to strangling her to the point of losing consciousness.

Then a few days later, The kittens hair started falling out in clumps. Police said Montes admitted to placing the cat in hot water.

A veterinarian determined that the Lulu's burns were consistent with her being immersed in hot water. Lulu's hind legs were bloody, and her fur and skin was falling off her legs.

Lulu is being treated for her injuries. Doctors say she may need skin grafts to repair damage.

Montes was charged with one count of extreme cruelty to animals, a fourth-degree felony.

He was booked into jail on a cash-only bond set at $50,000.
