Nonprofit that helps vets purchase homes asks for community's help after vandals strike

By: Joshua Zuber
SOCORRO, Texas The El Paso Collaborative is a nonprofit that helps area veterans get into rehabilitated housing for below-market cost.

"We acquire homes right now that have been foreclosed," project manager Juan Garcia said.

"They're sold to veterans with preference given to civil and low veterans," he said.

One home the nonprofit is working on was vandalized a couple of weeks ago.

The collaborative bought it in March.

"Some kids broke in through the rear window and tore a bit more of the walls," Garcia said.

The kitchen also had spray paint on it, and drug paraphernalia was found.

Garcia said he, along with Socorro police, believe a few Socorro High School students are to blame.

Garcia said he is asking the community's help protecting the homes because if too many of them are damaged, the cost to renovate will go too high to sell them back to area vets at a below-market cost.

"We are pretty much looking for local neighbors to keep an eye on these homes. These are homes that are here specifically for our veterans," Garcia said.
