Recycling plant fire has large plume of smoke hovering in far east El Paso

By: Jamel Valencia
EL PASO, Texas - A massive fire broke out at a recycling plant in Montana Vista Thursday morning. Residents near the fire are being asked to evacuate.

Several KFOX14 viewers called the newsroom, posted pictures on our Facebook Timeline and Twitter about the fire just after 8:30 a.m. A large black plume of smoke can be seen from miles away.

The Horizon City Fire Department said it happened at the Chicos Recycling Plant off of Rene Road near Montana Avenue and Zaragoza Drive.

Fire officials are encouraging motorists to stay away from the area if possible.

Homes near the recycling plant have been evacuated, said a fire official at the scene.

Firefighters from San Elizario, Clint, Fabens, Socorro, Montana Vista and El Paso are working together to put out the fire.

KFOX14 has a crew at the scene and is working on getting more information. Check back for updates on this story.
