US consulate murder defendant alleges torture
EL PASO, Texas (AP) A man authorities say was a border gang leader affiliated with a Mexican drug cartel contends he was tortured by Mexican police acting on behalf of the U.S. government after his arrest for the slaying of a U.S consulate employee.
Arturo Gallegos Castrellon (gah-YEY'-gohs kas-TREY'-yahn) is awaiting trial in January in El Paso on multiple charges related to the killings of consular employee Leslie Ann Enriquez Catton, her husband and the husband of another consular employee in Juarez, Mexico.
In court documents reviewed by the El Paso Times (http://bit.ly/18SSY2X ), Gallegos Castrellon alleges he and his wife were tortured after his November 2010 arrest in Juarez and before FBI agents arrived to interview him.
A Justice Department spokesman in El Paso wasn't available for comment because of the government shutdown.
