The Color Run 5k makes its way to El Paso for the first time
By: Gina Benitez
EL PASO, Texas
Thousands poured into Ascarate Park Sunday morning and got down and dirty.
The Color Run made its way to El Paso for the very first time.
It's the happiest 5k on the planet.
"It's for a great cause and I love doing 5k's for exactly that reason. The fact that we get to have fun at the same time, this is awesome and I hope it comes back to El Paso," said Stephanie Quiroz, a runner.
"I'm just blown away. I was at the start line right now on top of the huge stage and to see that massive crowd, for an event like this," said John Mack, the 5k sponsor for the American Cancer Society.
And it's the first time it's come to the Sun City.
"I'm actually the one that reached out initially to bring an additional venue to El Paso to help raise funds for the American Cancer Society," Mack said.
The American Cancer Society was the sole sponsor for the event so they get a cut of the registration and were able to raise money on-site.
"If you think about cancer, there's multiple cancer ribbons that represent different types of cancers. Why not have color run come in and represent those colors and more?" Mack said.
More than 9,000 El Pasoans registered for the run and 350 volunteers came together to make the day possible.
"We have other cities around us. Midland, Phoenix, Dallas that have all been promoted. To go in between those cities and now get El Paso we needed that," Mack said.
Mack said it took some convincing, but he was ultimately able to convince Color Run officials of everything El Paso has to offer.
"The proceeds coming back and staying in El Paso, being local, was very important for me. Just being a part of the ACS for the last eight years. This is something new and the new benchmark so we gotta do nothing but top it the next year," Mack said.
"This is awesome. This is the first time it's come to El Paso and we had a blast. It was fantastic, we are so happy. It really is the happiest 5k," Quiroz said.
