East El Paso residents worried golf club is going downhill
By: Stacey Welsh
EL PASO, Texas -- People living near the Vista Hills Golf Club in east El Paso are worried it is going downhill after the golf club restaurant closed down.
A former employee who did not want to give his name or talk on camera said he found out the restaurant closed down when he went to work Tuesday. He also said it closed down last week.
"I hate to see any part of it close down. The restaurant maybe is just the beginning of the end. I don't know. I think I saw a sign up there not too terribly long ago, maybe a year ago, where they were selling some property," east El Paso resident Leonard Jackson said.
KFOX14 tried to contact the former restaurant owner Thursday for more information as to why it closed down, but did not hear back.
No one from the Vista Hills Golf Club would send a written statement or talk to KFOX14 on camera Thursday about the restaurant closing and the state of the golf course. However, a golf club board member said over the phone the owner leasing the restaurant is responsible.
Franz Janicek, general manager of Vista Hills from 1993 to 2001, said he can only speak about the time he worked there but said the golf club has had problems in the past. He said that includes mismanagement and falling behind on payments.
"I think if they close the restaurant, it will be a matter of time before the club either sells that restaurant or the golf course itself. They don't make enough money to maintain the golf course," Janicek said.
The golf club board member would not answer any more questions Thursday but maintains the golf course is operating as usual now, and people can still buy food at the snack bar.
