EL PASO, Texas Federal officials seized more than 600 pounds of drugs in eight seizures over the weekend.
U.S. Customs and Border Protection Office of Field Operations officers seized about 18 pounds of cocaine and about 3 pounds of heroin Friday at the Bridge of the Americas.
Officials said that around 11 a.m., a drug-sniffing dog alerted officers to a Mazda 6 that was attempting to enter the U.S. from Mexico.
After a scan of the vehicle, officers found seven packages of cocaine and one of heroin hidden in the vehicle's dashboard, officials said.
"The layers of enforcement CBP employs all helped make this seizure possible," said CBP El Paso Port Director Hector Mancha. "As a result a sizeable load of cocaine and heroin did not make their destination."
Alfredo Olguin Rosas of Juarez was charged with the failed drug-smuggling attempt, officials said.
In the other seven seizures, officers found 634 pounds of marijuana and a small amount of cocaine, officials said.
