Minors no longer allowed in tanning beds
By: Melissa Gundersen
EL PASO, Texas -- Hundreds of new state laws are now in effect. One is aimed at preventing teens from getting skin cancer.
Prior to this week, anyone over the age of 16.5 was allowed to use indoor tanning beds with parental consent.
A new law took effect Sept 1. Now, anyone under 18 is no longer allowed to walk into a tanning salon and lay in the beds, which are filled with ultra violet lights.
I think it's a good thing. I'm sure there are dangers in those high levels of UV rays. And Im sure girls, especially that young, probably don't make the smartest decisions about their health, said Michelle Ramirez, an east El Paso resident.
Texas legislators agree. They said they passed the ban largely due to research by the University of Texas MD Anderson Cancer Center in Houston.
Findings show anyone who uses tanning beds before the age of 18 has an 85% chance of developing melanoma. Doctors call melanoma the most frequent form of cancer in young adults ages 20 to 30.
Gilbert Galindo said hes in favor of the new law.
Some (people) develop a habit to where they're going to want to start doing that every day. Ok, Im not going to lie, one of (my friends) might have developed a little problem, said Galindo.
On the flip side, teens are calling the ban unfair.
I mean, it's your body, if you want to get tan I think you should be able to get tan. I mean, if you're paying for it I think you should be able to do it, said Jesica Arreola.
Texas is the fifth state to ban minors from using tanning beds.
