Fitness Fest to benefit dog hacked by machete in Upper Valley
By: Genevieve Curtis
EL PASO: Texas- KFOX14 first introduced viewers to Marley, a dog that barely survived after a neighbor allegedly attacked him with a machete in the Upper Valley in June.
Now, people are coming together to support Marley and other abused animals.
"You would not believe this dog is still alive after being hit 12 times with a machete. It's incredible," said Maud Snell, Marley's grandmother.
A machete attack, three surgeries and a lot of love later, only a few scars could tell you what Marley has been through in the past few months.
Snell said Marley still can't see out of one of his eyes and one side of his mouth is numb, but that doesn't stop him from giving out big kisses.
In June, KFOX14 went with Marley to his first vet appointment since the brutal attack. His doctors call it the worst case of animal cruelty they've ever seen.
The pictures from the attack were too graphic to show on TV but Marley's story soon took off.
"You would not believe how many e-mails I have had," said Snell. "People just knock on our door," she added.
His story touched animal lover Tracy Chenault who decided to organize an event to raise money and awareness for abused animals.
"This is my second passion, I've got to do it for the animals," said Chenault.
The event called Marley's Miracle is Sunday, Sept. 15 and features several fun fitness activities including a 4K run, 1 mile walk, Zumba and yoga.
But the focus is on the pets.
"It's mainly just to bring awareness to just a horrible situation and to give the animals a voice and to support stopping it, stopping the cruelty," said Chenault.
The proceeds will go to Marley's extensive medical bills and to Crossroads Animal Hospital, where Marley had his surgeries, to help other animals.
Now Marley the Miracle dog can lend a paw to help save another pet.
"We are so happy to have him alive," said Snell.
