El Paso to hold community meeting about Montana construction
By: Stacey Welsh
EL PASO, Texas -- Construction is set to start in the next couple of weeks to improve the intersection of Montana Avenue and Lorne Road near the future site of a Sun Metro maintenance facility. El Paso's Engineering and Construction Management Department will hold a community meeting to update people on the construction at Edgemere Elementary from 5-7 p.m. Monday.
"We'll have all the pans plans available and all the project managers so people can come in and take a look at the plans and get answers to any questions they might have," El Paso Engineering and Construction Management Martin Bartlett said.
"We're going to see at least one lane closure in each direction, meaning traffic will be down to two lanes in each direction, as opposed to the current three lanes in each direction," Bartlett said.
The construction will add a traffic light at the intersection of Montana and Lorne. People living in that area told KFOX14 they think the construction could be a hassle, but would provide improvements.
"Some of these people just speed down Montana. To me, a stoplight is worth it," east El Paso resident Fred Moreno said.
The project will add sidewalks between Lorne and Wedgwood Drive. It will also replace asphalt with concrete pavement to help buses better turn from Montana into the new facility.
The city said there will be no official detours, but some residents have already been thinking about ways to speed up their commute while this construction is going on.
"I believe it's Limerick that goes from Edgemere to Montana. Some people may want to use that to avoid traffic and stoplights and so on. I think for the most part we seek out those lights to feel a little safer," east El Paso resident Irene Medina said.
The city expects the construction to last until about the end of this year.
