Padres may play in Tucson next year if El Paso stadium isn't ready

By: Jesse Martinez
EL PASO, Texas According to Pima County officials, the Tucson Padres have extended their contract for a year when they are expected to start playing ball in El Paso next spring.

According to Pima County's website, the board of supervisors voted on the contract extension to keep the team in Tucson for another year if the stadium being built in downtown El Paso isn't ready for the 2014 season.

MountainStar Sports Group, which owns the Tucson Padres slated to move to El Paso, will pay the Pima County Stadium District $70,000 up front to extend the contract until Oct. 31, 2014, according to Pima County officials.

If everything goes as planned, the extension will be terminated.
