Update: Car plunges off bridge, leaves woman in bad shape

By: Ruben Veloz and Jesse Martinez
EL PASO, Texas -- A woman is fighting for her life after she drove her car off a bridge in south central El Paso, said police.

It happened around 2:25 a.m. Thursday on the Piedras Street ramp south of Interstate 10.

Police said Tanairy Arias, 21, lost control of her 1998 Nissan Maxima for unknown reasons, which caused her to travel across several lanes and collide into the left guardrail.

Police said the Maxima went off the overpass and fell 30 feet before landing in a business lot under the Piedras ramp.

Firefighters had to use the Jaws of Life to get her out of the car, police said.

A sergeant on the scene told KFOX14 the woman was rushed to University Medical Center where she underwent emergency surgery.

Police believe speed and alcohol may be factors in the collision.
