Man killed in New Mexico flood near Elephant Butte identified

TRUTH OR CONSEQUENCES, N.M.-- A Phoenix man died after being swept away by flood waters last week and into a ravine. 

New Mexico State Police said Steven Elsley, 53, of Phoenix, was traveling through Sierra County, when his car was washed away.

NMSP spokeman Sgt. Emmanuel Gutierrez said Elsley's partially submerged rental car was found in a rugged area nearly a mile from a state road in Ash Canyon, near Elephant Butte Dam. Elsley's body was inside of the car.

Invesstigators believe he died after his car was washed into a ravine, and carried away.

No other information was given.
