Update: Deputies arrest man accused of beating girlfriend, threatening children
By: Jesse Martinez
DONA ANA COUNTY, N.M. -- Deputies arrested a man accused of beating his girlfriend and threatening to kill her and their children after they received a tip from a 911 caller.
Officials said the argument started when Jorge Martinez, 35, was woken up by his girlfriend before 6 a.m. Tuesday.
Martinez grew angry, saying that he wasn't woken up with enough time to get ready and slapped his girlfriend for "acting stupid," police said.
Martinez threatened to cut her 3-year-old daughter's throat followed by their infant son, police said. He then threatened to kill his girlfriend, police said.
Police said that out of fear, the woman did not call for help until Martinez left for work.
A warrant was issued for his arrest Wednesday for one count of false imprisonment and two counts of battery against a household member. His bail is set at $20,000.
On Friday, deputies received a tip that Martinez was seen at a convenience store on West Picacho Avenue.
Deputies initiated a traffic stop for a vehicle Martinez was driving, and he was arrested when his identity was confirmed, deputies said.
Martinez has a criminal history of battery against a household member, breaking and entering, receiving stolen property, illegal narcotics and firearms possession and carrying a concealed weapon.
