Road closure could affect local businesses and make for a longer commute
By: Stacey Welsh
EL PASO, Texas -- Starting Monday, Country Club Road will be closed to traffic from Doniphan Drive to River Run Street for about a year and a half. Larry Gold's restaurant is on that 2-mile stretch of road. He opened Hello Pizza about 27 years ago.
"Right now we're hoping that it doesn't affect us that much because we have a certain clientele that comes here because it's real New York Food. We just hope that the road doesn't bother them and they find another way to get here," Gold said.
El Paso's Engineering and Construction Management Department said the closure is because of construction projects. The city said the construction will add a roundabout at the intersection of Country Club Road and Memory Lane.
The road closure also means detours. The city said westbound traffic will detour north on Doniphan, west on Artcraft Road and south on McNutt Road. Eastbound traffic will detour south on McNutt Road to Sunland Park Drive to Doniphan.
It could currently take less than five minutes to drive along Country Club from River Run to Doniphan. After driving both detours Sunday, KFOX14 estimates they will both take about 15 minutes and are about 9 miles long.
Despite a possibly longer commute, some would like to see construction improve the area.
"I think it's going to cause some problems for the families that live close to it, but I hope it makes everything better," Santa Teresa resident Nohemi Torres said.
The city said the project will also add a center left turn lane, add a right turn lane at Montoya Drive, raise curbs and improve lighting along the road.
