Grand jury indicts Sunland Park official for extortion
SUNLAND PARK, N.M.
On Thursday, a grand jury indicted Victor Diaz, the public works director for Sunland Park, on two counts of extortion.
KFOX 14 broke the story and brought the issue to the public's attention in July.
As KFOX 14 reported July 19, Diaz was placed on paid administrative leave because of these accusations.
KFOX 14 learned that according to the indictment, it was on or about April 1, 2013, when Diaz allegedly compelled the victim, Guadalupe Quiroz, to do something she otherwise would not have done.
Documents say Diaz forced Quiroz to pay him $40 to sign off on volunteer hours Quiroz accrued.
Quiroz was reportedly afraid if she did not give Diaz the money, she would lose her volunteer hours.
The single mother of three said she must volunteer 86 hours a month for the city of Sunland Park in return for cash assistance from the city of Sunland Park.
The second count, court documents show, specifically points out Quiroz feared that she would lose her volunteer hours if she did not comply with Diaz's demands.
Both counts constitute third-degree felonies.
The Dona Ana District Attorney's Office told KFOX 14 the next step for Diaz is an arraignment, which the date has not yet been set.
