Update: Ysleta ISD selects familiar face as interim superintendent
By: Ruben Veloz, Jesse Martinez
EL PASO, Texas--The board at Ysleta Independent School District has named a new interim superintendent to head the district.
The board voted unanimously to hire Anna Perez, a woman who knows the district well.
"She retired several years ago. It was before I became a board member," said YISD board President Patricia Torres McLean.
Perez retired from YISD in 2010, and served as the associate superintendent of operations and associate superintendent of schools such as Del Valle, Riverside, Camino Real and others.
Mclean said details of her salary and benefits have yet to be sorted out.
"We have to have that discussion with her, as far as salary and those types of details and also with the attorney," said McLean.
Perez will be taking over the district as the board waits for the results of an internal audit that will determine whether administrators manipulated test scores to cheat federal accountability standards.
This is the same cheating scheme that got Lorenzo Garcia and the El Paso Independent School District in trouble.
Yseleta hasn't been accused of any wrongdoing.
McLean said it's not known how long Perez will hold the interim position because the search for a permanent superintendent hasn't even started.
"We were wanting to get through this step first," said McLean "and then going to take on the superintendent search after we get this interim superintendent set."
As KFOX14 reported Zolkoski announced his retirement in June because of health issues involving his ailing parents.
"We're happy that he is going to spend time with family like he wants to, said board president Patricia Torres McLean about now-former superintendent Michael Zolkoski's departure.
His seat was empty after officially stepping down last week.
"We're going to miss him, but we're going to have to keep the board going forward," said McLean.
The board hopes Perez can start right after the Labor Day holiday on Sept 3.
Meanwhile, the board believes a draft form of the audit may be finished and released by the end of August.
A final draft could be released by October.
