Apple announces trade-in program for third party chargers

By: Jesse Martinez
EL PASO, Texas Apple announced their USB Power Adapter Takeback Program to allow customers to have properly designed adapters for their Apple products.

The company announce the program on its website Tuesday stating that recent reports suggest that some counterfeit and third party adapters "may not be designed properly and could result in safety issues."

Reuters reported in July that Apple Inc. was investigating an accident where a Chinese woman was killed by an electric shock when she answered a call on her iPhone 5 while it was charging.

Apple announced Tuesday that starting Aug. 16, if a customer has concerns with their USB power adapters for their iPhone, iPad or iPod, they can take them to an Apple retail store or authorized service provider.

Customers who do so will be able to buy an Apple USB power adapter for $10. The promotion will run through Oct. 18.
