Teen couple accused of abusing 3-month-old son

By: Jesse Martinez
LAS CRUCES, N.M. A 16- and 17-year-old couple is facing child-abuse charges after their 3-month-old child was sent to the emergency room.

Police discovered that on Aug. 3, the teen couple took their son to Memorial Medical Center, and doctors determined the child was suffering from severe trauma and injuries to his leg and head.

The child was later taken to University Medical Center at El Paso for more intensive care, police said.

Medical professionals informed detectives that the child's injuries were related to child abuse, police said.

The couple was interviewed by police, and detectives determined that their statements did not match with the capabilities of the child, police said.

The couple was arrested later that day, and the boy's father attempted to run from police at Memorial Medical Center, police said. He was later arrested

Police said the child is still hospitalized and is recovering from his injuries.

The couple, which KFOX14 is choosing not to identify because of their ages, were charged with one count each of intentional child abuse resulting in great bodily harm, conspiracy to commit child abuse and tampering with evidence. They were booked into the Dona Ana County Detention Center.

The boy's father was also held on warrants out of El Paso, Texas, police said.
