Child predator sought in Las Cruces

By: Gina Benitez
LAS CRUCES, N.M. - Las Cruces police investigators are offering a $1,000 reward for information that helps identify a man suspected of sexually assaulting a young girl more than two weeks ago.

Police said sometime between 4 p.m. and 5 p.m. on March 11, a man approached two young children as they played behind their home on the 1900 block of Carlyle Drive.

The man is alleged to have asked the boy and girl to accompany him to the other side of the railroad tracks and into a drainage ditch.

Once there, the man is believed to have distracted the 6-year-old boy in order to sexually assault the 4-year-old girl.

Police believe the man asked the girl to take off her clothes.

Police said the girl was frightened by the incident but did not reveal any physical injuries.

The man was described as short with a medium build and fair complexion. He had short, black hair and a noticeable scar on his face. He also had a bandage or tape on one of his pinky fingers.

"We believe the suspect may be a homeless person. We did get some information from some other people who live at a homeless shelter here in town that they had seen someone matching that description," said Dan Trujillo, spokesperson for the Las Cruces Police Department.

Anyone with information that can help identify this man is asked to contact Las Cruces Crime Stoppers at 1-800-222-TIPS (8477) or send a tip via text message to CRIMES (274637), keyword LCTIPS.

The Crime Stoppers number and text messaging services are operational 24 hours a day and you do not have to give your name to collect a reward.
