Soldiers help keep children safe daily at local El Paso schools

By: Chrisdyann Uribe

EL PASO, TexasSoldiers help the students at Bill Sybert School and other schools cross the street every morning.

We come in here and help assist the crossing guards where theyre short staffed because theres only a limited number of those so we supplement that and make  sure children get across the street safe, said Sgt. Michael Alderson.

The soldiers ensure that kids get in the classroom safe and parents move freely as they pass through the street.

They also help with other tasks throughout the school.

Soldiers started coming in and saying, we want to do more, we want to do more. It expended to where we brought medics over here to come screen. We started reading programs with the school. We escort and chaperone, said Lt. Colonel Lawrence White.

Staff at Bill Sybert school told KFOX14 it was very grateful to have the soldiers come by to assist.

Theyre coming here on their time making sure that all of these beautiful children that they dont know personally are safe, Cynthia Velazquez, assistant principal.

Its something that look forward to on a daily basis even if they arent working.

They cant wait to come back. They come in on their off times. They can have a day off from the army and theyll still come here and still provide that service, White said.
