YISD board trustee Ana Dueñez owes thousands in property taxes

By: Bill Melugin
EL PASO, Texas A source said a Ysleta Independent School District board trustee has failed to pay property taxes for several years.

Documents show that YISD trustee Ana Dueez owes thousands of dollars in property taxes, which support local school districts. She also hasnt made a full payment in three years.

Dueez owes more than $4,000 at her Lower Valley home, and critics said shes directly taking money from the students shes supposed to represent.

She last made a payment in February 2013 of $155, but she owed more than $3,000 at that time.

Officials with the El Paso County Tax Assessors Office said Dueezs account was delinquent between 2011 and 2013, and she received noticed that if she doesnt pay her debt, she could face litigation.

Ysleta Teachers Association President Arlinda Valencia supported Dueez during her election. She said she still supports her now, and that the trustee has done a good job for the district.

I don't know her situation. I don't know why, but the fact is that the voting that she's doing right now, the way she's speaking up for others, she's doing a great job, Valencia said. "If it's true, I hope she can take care of it as soon as possible."

Valencia said Duenez does the bidding of her constituents, and that her overall body of work outweighs a mistake. She also said Duenez should not be removed from the school board.

"We totally support Mrs. Duenez, what we have seen her doing on that board, she's doing a great job," Valenica said.

KFOX14 tried to contact Dueez, but she has not responded.

District officials said they wont comment on the matter because it is a personnel issue.

KFOX14 also reached out to YISD board president Patricia McLean to find out what Duenez's future will be, but a call was not returned.
