Driver of SUV in east El Paso crash identified

By: Gina Benitez, Jesse Martinez and Jamel Valencia
EL PASO, Texas The driver of an SUV struck by a Mustang in east El Paso Thursday was identified.

Cesar Cordova, 33, was killed and another man was seriously injured in a crash that happened around 2:10 p.m. on the 10900 block of Vista Del Sol Drive, near Loma Verde Drive.

One day later, shards of glass are still scattered along the street.

Two tracks mark the spot where one car made its final stop.

"I was on my way home from work yesterday and I saw the whole two sides of Vista Del Sol blocked off," said Rene Hernandez, a homeowner in the area.

Residents who live right by the crash site we spoke with Friday didn't witness yesterday's accident but most of them said they're not surprised.

"My husband and I have been here for 40 years and it keeps getting worse. People just speed like very fast," said Antonia Prieto, another area homeowner.

"There's a lot of speeders. There's actually some motorcycle cops that hang out right here at Sombre Verde. But, not all the time," Hernandez said.

According to police, the driver of a red Ford Mustang, Francisco Lopez, was traveling westbound on Vista Del Sol Drive and lost control, crossing into the eastbound lane and hit Cordova's white SUV, police said.

Investigators determined Lopez was speeding.

Cordova and Lopez were taken to the hospital where Cordova died, police said.

Cordova worked at Fred Loya Insurance and was driving a company vehicle at the time.

Homeowners in this area said speeding isn't the only issue.

"I mean you should see the traffic here in the morning. It's just like you were on the freeway," Prieto said.

And picking up some extra speed while cruising this street isn't difficult.

"I guess because it's going downhill. And then after this downhill, it turns -- so its even more dangerous," Hernandez said.

Lopez's condition is not known.

Vista Del Sol Drive from Sombra Verde Drive to Bodega Place was closed Thursday afternoon into the evening so police could investigate the crash.

No charges have been filed against the 21-year-old, said police.

The investigation is ongoing.
