El Pasoans join gyms, start exercise plans as resolutionsBy: Stacey Welsh EL PASO, Texas -- You might be getting excited to join a gym and start working out more in the new year, but fitness experts told KFOX14 that's where the commitment ends for many in the Borderland. Chad Falco owns Chad's Gym & Studio in East El Paso, and he said it's a good idea to get help from a personal trainer if you haven't worked out before. "People get lost. They get frustrated, and they usually quit and end up giving their money away for the year for nothing. Everybody wants instant gratification, and there is none," Falco said. He also said it's important to realize you won't get instant gratification after starting to work out. "In the bigger gyms, you see two or three people join, and after three months, one person keeps going. They're changing, they're looking better and their friends are frustrated and aggravated," Falco said. El Paso Marathon Race Director Mike Coulter said he often sees people get excited to start training for races in the new year, but it's important to take it slow. "There's so many programs out there on the Internet that you can take advantage of, 'couch to 5k' programs that will help walk you through that process. My main concern is people getting out there and trying to do too much," Coulter said. Coulter also said it's a good idea to sign up for races in the spring to motivate yourself to train. He also said many set a goal to run the El Paso Marathon or half marathon in February. The marathon will start at the top of Transmountain Road and end in Downtown El Paso. "The important thing in training for that event is to make sure that you've got plenty of downhill training under your belt. The half marathon has one mile where you have to do a climb. So you might want to train with a little bit of hill climbing," Coulter said. With little experience exercising, you might also have to deal with injuries when starting one of these workout programs. "Usually just use Motrin and maybe a couple days off. Maybe ice it if there's some swelling or inflammation, but if it's persistent, maybe you want to see a doctor and get a second opinion," Falco said. Some El Pasoans told KFOX14 they do plan to start working out more often in 2014. "I want my whole family involved. Later on, when they have kids, I hope they do the same thing with their kids," East El Paso resident Raul Diaz said. Falco also said it's important to prepare meals ahead of time and avoid fast food to see results more quickly.
