Mega Millions lottery sales to help education across the borderland

By: Ruben Veloz

EL PASO, Texas--The drawing for tonight's Mega Millions lottery has jumped to $586 million.

"I'd probably try very hard not to tell anybody. I'd do everything anonymously," said west El Pasoan Margaret McFadden.

Millions of people around the country have been heading to the gas stations and convenience stores hoping to buy the winning ticket.

McFadden tells KFOX14 her fianc plans on buying one later today.

"I think he's pretty much doing numbers, yeah certain numbers those kind of things," said McFadden.

According to its website, the Texas Lottery said it has helped raise more than $15 billion for education since 1992.

In New Mexico, more than $585 million have been raised for education and scholarships, according to the New Mexico Lottery website.

McFadden tells KFOX14 that's one reason she likes to play.

"It provides jobs and helps things," said McFadden.

Buying a ticket in Texas also benefits the Veterans Assistance Fund.

If you do play, the odds of winning the Mega Millions jackpot are one in 259 million.

Experts say you would have a better chance of getting hit by an asteroid than you would at winning the lottery, but McFadden said she'll still buy tickets no matter what the odds.

"Pay for all the end of life expenses, education for my kids that kind of thing, and that probably won't even touch the tip," said McFadden.

People have until 6pm to buy a ticket for Tuesday night's drawing.

The numbers will be drawn at 9 p.m. Central Time.

If no one draws the winning numbers from now until Christmas the jackpot could reach up to a billion dollars.
