Meet the man who submitted Chihuahuas team name
By: Bill Melugin
EL PASO, Texas --
Just minutes after El Paso's AAA baseball team was named the "Chihuahuas," KFOX14 spoke with Shae Vierra, the man who submitted the winning name.
"I thought it was a nice bi-cultural name, and my wife has a Chihuahua, and I thought it would be a good mascot for my children, and also, we live in a Chihuahuan desert so I kind of thought it checked all the boxes," Vierra said. "You can blame me if it goes wrong, but I think it's a great name."
Team president Alan Ledford agrees.
"I love it, for some it will take time, there's no doubt about it, with any name it takes time, everybody has an opinion," Ledford said. "The people we've shown this to prior to this process, including people in our sport who have been through this process before and understand what works and what communities embrace, almost everybody has been positive."
Ledford told KFOX14 the most exciting part of the process has been the last week or so.
"Everybody was guessing, we debuted the process with the teaser campaign with the eyes, and people got a taste of AAA baseball, and what is now El Paso Chihuahuas baseball," Ledford said.
Because Vierra submitted the winning name, he will receive season tickets, a personalized jersey and will get to throw out the ceremonial first pitch at the Chihuahuas first home game.
"It just seems really neat, I can't wait to go to the ballpark with my boys," Vierra said. "We're just really excited, it's a really exciting time, and go Chihuahuas!"
