Perspective on new minor league name from former El Paso baseball team owner

By: Joshua Zuber

EL PASO, Texas -

It was Tuesday when El Paso found out what its new minor league baseball team would be called the El Paso Chihuahuas.

Then the noise made about the team went from cheers at the Plaza Theatreto bickering online and in the streets.

But despite thousands online saying they're against the new name, the former owner of El Paso's former independent league baseball team, the El Paso Diablos, says give it time and the name will grow on soon-to-be baseball fans.

"I think it's going to be a lot of fun," Jim Paul said.

Paul says look at how the public handled the name change from the Sun Kings to the Diablos.

"There wasn't a big hoopla about it. I think today it would be a big deal. People are willing to speak out about anything," Paul said.

Even with all the naysayers, Paul predicts that Mountain Star, the group that owns the Chihuahuas, has ample marketing opportunities to make the team a nationally-recognizedbrand.

"What you have now is Chihuahua chips with queso and jalapenos. That's what we have now! And we're going to have the running of the Chihuahua. You could turn that into a fundraiser. It would be a tourist attraction to see the running of the Chihuahuasin El Paso!"

Plus, one of the teams in the world series is a great example of why, no matter what the name, having a team just a cut under major league is going to be exciting.

"In the World Series right now the Cardinalshave sevenguys on this team (who were) playing Triple Abaseball last summer," Paul said.
