Early voting underway in San Elizario incorporation election
By: Stacey Welsh
EL PASO COUNTY, Texas -- People living in San Elizario have the chance to vote on whether the small community will incorporate and become its own city.
This incorporation effort comes after a state judge overturned Socorro's decision to annex parts of San Eli earlier this year. The San Elizario Incorporation efforts group is educating registered voters on why it feels San Eli should incorporate.
"We have a committee of about 40 members. We have quite a few of them who are actively block-walking and reaching registered voters," incorporation group president Maya Sanchez said.
While taxes could go up for San Eli if incorporation happens, El Paso County Commissioner Vince Perez said more taxes mean more services.
"In the city of El Paso you have a fire department, a police department and regular trash pick up among other services. In San Elizario, they don't have the same level of service," Perez said.
About 85 people have voted early in San Eli, but that does not include some who have voted at the El Paso County Courthouse downtown.
Early voting locations in the San Eli area include Ana Garcia-Enriquez Middle School, the Socorro City Council chambers at 860 N. Rio Vista Road and the Pavo Real Recreation Center.
Sanchez also said members of the incorporation efforts group will provide rides to the polling places. To coordinate, call 915-867-9381.
"You're able to decide how quickly you can get to the polls on your time schedule. A lot of times, if people wait until November 5, they may have to wait hours to vote," Sanchez said.
San Eli resident Ramon Holguin voted early this week.
"Some people don't have the time when they do their shopping and pay their bills to be here. Early voting gives them an opportunity to be here in order to vote on this election that is very important to our community," Holgiun said.
