El Paso Sheriff's office warns about new 'warrant' telephone scam

El Paso Sheriff's office warns about new 'warrant' telephone scam

By: Ruben Veloz, EPCSO

EL PASO, Texas--Officials with El Paso County Sheriff's Office are warning people about an ongoing telephone scam.

The El Paso County Sherriff's office says people are being tricked into believing they have a warrant out for their arrest and gives callers instructions on how it can be cleared.

The number shows up on people's caller ID as 1-855-345-6211 and has since been reported to EPCSO.

The sheriff's office said the telephone scam starts with a male voice claiming to be from the "Texas Felony Warrant Division."

Victims targeted in the scam are given instructions and then told their warrants will be cleared if they send hundreds of dollars through a wire service, like money gram.

They're then given instructions on where to send the money.

KFOX14 tried calling the scam number back but received a message saying this:

"Unfortunately, our offices are currently closed. Our normal operating hours are form 8 a.m. to midnight."

Instead what you should be hearing is this:

"Thank you for calling the El Paso County Sherriff's office criminal warrant and fugitive apprehension section."

That's what is heard when a person calls EPCSO warrant information number to find out whether or not you or someone you know has outstanding warrants.

KFOX14 went online and found a list of hundreds of people with outstanding warrants, and unpaid citations for things such as, speeding tickets, expired registration and having no driver license.

The El Paso County Sheriff's office said people should never send or wire any money to anyone without verifying who the caller is, especially through the phone.

What people should do instead is call or should online to verify citations with local Municipal Courts or local Justice of the Peace Courts for accurate information.
