LAS CRUCES, N.M. -- There are only four days until the digital television transition and only four days left of television viewing for those without converter boxes. The Federal Communications Commission saw with the growth of technology a decade ago and decided it needed to condense what is called spectrum.Spectrum is basically all the radio frequencies of electromagnetic waves. An attorney with the FCC said switching to a digital format will not only help picture and audio quality but it will also help reduce the amount of radio frequencies that television takes up, freeing up radio signals for other things like public safety.Police, fire and rescue agencies have operated on the same spectrum space and created problems in the past.Switching to a digital signal also allows television stations to have several channels. Some have been designated for 24-7 weather channels or other programming. If you'd like more information on the switch you can get it by clicking on the digital transition tab under the about us tab at the top of the screen.
