Steve Roldan
Reporter/Weathercaster
"Fun, Demanding and Exciting." That's how I describe my job as a Reporter/Weathercaster here at KFOX. I enjoy both the challenges and the rewards of the position I hold. Every day is something different: a new story, new people.
I joined KFOX in September of 2001, and I already have a connection to El Paso. My mother grew up here. I however, grew up along the beaches of Southern California, and majored in Journalism at California State University, Northridge.
Here at KFOX News at Nine, you can find me doing a little bit of everything. From bringing you "Breaking News" stories, to tracking severe storms and weather here along the Borderland.
I started my career in television as an Anchor/Reporter at KSTF-TV in Scottsbluff, Nebraska. After a brief stay there, I was off to one of the coldest cities in the country, Fargo, North Dakota. I worked as the Education Reporter for KVLY-TV. Living and working in North Dakota taught me the challenges and difficulties of covering severe weather, and the importance of it. I've covered blizzards, tornadoes, floods and frigid temperatures that sometimes never climbed above zero during the day. And that's without the wind-chill!! Reporting live in LIVE in sub-zero temperatures was part of the job description. At 20 degrees below zero, you can't even write anything down in your notepad!
From Fargo, I quickly jumped on an opportunity in the Last Frontier. I worked as a reporter at KTVA-TV in Anchorage, Alaska. One of my favorite assignments there took me 400 miles north of the Arctic Circle in search of Polar Bears. There, I ate whale blubber (Muktuk) with native Eskimo's, sat on the frozen Arctic Ocean to watch the Northern Lights, and experienced temperatures that never got warmer than 35 below zero.
Another assignment in Alaska took me to St. Lawrence Island in the Bering Sea, on the International Dateline, 40 miles from the coastline of Russia. There, I joined the military who helped bring the Spirit of Christmas to a remote village that has little contact with the outside world.
My reporting career has taken me all over the world. In June of 2002, I was fortunate enough to take part in the RIAS-Berlin Journalist Exchange Program. I traveled to Germany and other countries in Europe for several weeks to learn about Politics, Media and Government.
Some of my most memorable interviews include Chuck Yeager, Marion Ross, Minneapolis Blues Singer Jonny Lang, and the famous Alaskan Musher Dee Dee Jonrowe.
In my spare time I love exploring El Paso, and savoring some of the best Mexican food in the world! If I'm not eating, I'm probably out skiing, reading an Anne Rice novel, on a bike ride, or on a hike with my dog named Bailey.
