KFOX News: 10th Anniversary Special

Posted: 7:49 am MDT September 14, 2007Updated: 5:09 pm MST November 5, 2008

Ten years ago, KFOX-TV changed the face of news coverage in the El Paso - Las Cruces television market. Shunning the time-filling silly talk that had taken over the majority of content in local newscasts, KFOX News at Nine first aired on Sept. 15, 1997, focusing on the local news that impacted viewers' lives on a daily basis.

The accolades quickly rolled in. "If you have not seen the news on KFOX, maybe you should!" proclaimed the El Paso Times. According to another critic, "They have more stories, more detail… a professional CNN-look right here in El Paso!" "What we've seen looks very exciting! It's going to be very successful," predicted a third review.

Viewers were quick to notice, and KFOX News at Nine became the favorite newscast for tens of thousands of local residents. Within four years, KFOX News at Nine became the #1 newscast for the first time - a speed of ratings growth unheard of in the television industry.

And industry experts seconded viewers opinions about the quality of KFOX News, presenting the station and staff with dozens of local, regional and even national awards. Emmys , Edward R. Murrows, Katies ; awards never before received by an El Paso television station became commonplace for KFOX. In fact, the 300 journalism awards KFOX News has received in its first decade are more than all other local television stations combined!

The growth continued in January of 2004 when KFOX changed television news yet again with the launch of The KFOX Morning News. For the first time, El Paso and Las Cruces viewers had an entire news team working overnight. Instead of being forced to watch "newscasters" reading the newspaper on-air, viewers turned to KFOX for complete and exclusive coverage of overnight breaking news. By July of 2007, The KFOX Morning News was also #1 in viewer demographics.

Despite all the successes, KFOX is most proud of being the leader when our community is in crisis. Whether it's an event such as September 11, 2001, when only KFOX was on the air with local news updates every half hour day and night all week long; or the flooding of 2006, when KFOX provided the most news coverage and was the only station to organize fundraising efforts for our neighbors in desperate need - viewers know they can count on KFOX to be on the air when it matters most.

After accomplishing more in its first decade than its competitors have in a half-century, the KFOX staff is ready for the challenges of the future. From High Definition television, to the next breaking news event, KFOX will be there with Coverage You Can Count On.
