KFOX Morning Reporter

For some people work might be a drag, but for me it's something I truly enjoy. As a journalist I have the chance of making a difference in other people's lives on a daily basis, and that matters to me. I've learned everyone has a story worth telling. If there's a way I can help, I do.

My passion for news started in a high school TV production class. I went on to graduate from the University of Florida in 2004, with a degree in Telecommunications-News. I started off as general assignment reporter for Mid-Florida Public Radio, WUFT-FM, and worked my way up to assistant producer, and finally host of the Noon Show. I also hosted a segment on All Things Considered. While in school I had the opportunity to work side by side with producers and reporters for Univision’s Primer Impacto. One of the highlights of my internship was covering Cuban legend Celia Cruz’s memorial service in Miami. The event drew thousands of people.

I got my start in the business after graduation. I worked as writer for WSVN-TV’s Today In Florida (the morning show), then moved on to Nightside. Often the overnight hours got to me, but I knew I had to hang in there because it was a stepping stone to get me where I wanted to be. Sure enough, eight months later I landed my first on-air job with KFOX.

I’ve been in the Sun City since September 2005. I can honestly say El Paso is an unfound city, not just some border town in the desert. I can see why so many people retire here, and why others choose to raise a family. It’s a big city with a small town feel. Aside from the always-perfect weather, the cleanliness of the city and the people make it worthwhile.

About me, I'm a first-generation Cuban-American, who was raised in Miami. It sounds funny now, but I didn't actually learn English until I started school. I'm very proud of my roots, and I am fascinated by other cultures, customs, and languages. With that said, I’m very open to trying all kinds of food.

When I’m not at the station, I enjoy spending time with my husband, catching up with old friends, and relaxing-although that’s hard to do sometimes.

Don’t hesitate to say "Hi" if you see me out. I always look forward to meeting new people. Feel free to email me your story idea… Arleene.Barrios@kfoxtv.com
