EL PASO, Texas -- The University of Texas at El Paso's football team is gearing up for its 2013 season with a new head coach. UTEP Head Football Coach Sean Kugler and players met with supporters and booster club members at the annual Football Kickoff Luncheon.

"We've got to do our part. We've got to win games, and that's what it's all about. I understand the mentality in sports is if you win games the fans will show up. We've got to do our part on the football field. I know that the great Miner fans will support us," Kugler said.

As KFOX14 previously reported, Kugler is a former UTEP football player and assistant coach for the Pittsburgh Steelers.

Football players also said the team has been working hard to deliver results under a new coach.

"Anytime someone is slacking on one play, he'll call them out. He's not afraid to call you out, no matter who you are. I think that's one thing that's going to go a long way," UTEP quarterback Jameill Showers said.
Despite the hype around the upcoming season, the university's athletic department said it has not seen an increase in ticket sales. However, officials expect that could change.

"They have been very steady. Our fans have a tendency to wait until the last minute. The last two weeks is usually a hard push. I think we're on track to have an increase in ticket sales but we'll have to wait and see," UTEP Athletic Director Bob Stull said.

Students KFOX14 spoke with on campus said they are excited to attend football games to see what a new coach brings to the table.

"Aside from getting my degree obviously, that's one of the biggest things I'm looking forward to: the football season. I do plan to be out here tailgating and enjoying myself," UTEP junior Vanessa Gonzalez said.

The Miners are set to face off against New Mexico at home at Sun Bowl Stadium on Sept. 7.
