EL PASO, Texas -- EL PASO, Texas – The city of El Paso is expecting more than 3,000 people and $4.1 million in revenue to flow into the city with the start of the Conference USA basketball tournament Tuesday.

“We’re talking about people staying in hotels, restaurants, bars, renting cars, shopping and enjoying our beautiful city,” said Bryan Crowe, general manager of Destination El Paso. “You get a reputation for being a big city hosting a tournament like this."

Crowe pointed out that the city also has a 9 percent tax on the hotel rooms that will start booking up.

“Seven of that is used for the convention center, 2 percent goes to the new downtown ballpark , so having those revenues helps us pay for things we've already committed to,” Crowe said.

Local businesses are also preparing for a boost in revenue.

"We definitely are expecting a bigger crowd,” said Tabitha Ramirez, a bartender at Cabo Joe's. “We’re typically busy on these nights, but with people coming from out of town to see their teams play, we’re very close to UTEP and we expect them to come over here and party and have some food and drinks.”

Ramirez told KFOX14 they’re preparing for crowds the same way they did during the Sun Bowl.

“We’re ordering more beer basically. That's what we sell, our food, too; we've been stocking up,” Ramirez said. "We are nice to everyone. We welcome you all, it doesn't matter which team, come on in."

Potbelly Sandwich Works told KFOX14 they already had several to-go orders for players on the numerous teams that are here to play in El Paso.

UTEP will play Wednesday night at 6 p.m. against the winner of East Carolina and UT San Antonio.
