City guarantees downtown ballpark will be ready by April story image

EL PASO, Texas -- The project planner for the downtown El Paso ballpark was asked directly at a community meeting Tuesday night if he would be willing to put his job and reputation on the line by guaranteeing the stadium will be ready by opening day on April 11.

"It will be ready by April," Justin Bass said.

Bass could not guarantee it would be open by the 11th.

The questions come as construction crews race against time to have the stadium ready for the Chihuahua's first home game.

City officials told the public Tuesday that permits have been given to the contractors to allow around-the-clock, seven-day-per-week construction.

"We're really past the phase of bulldozers and wrecking balls, it's really going to be much more quiet construction work, things like interior work, painting and brick work things that shouldn't be that loud," said Martin Bartlett, spokesman for the city's engineering department.

Bartlett said he's aware there are rumors flying around that the ballpark won't be ready in time.

"This is a project that's clearly very emotional for a lot of El Pasoans and we clearly understand that," Bartlett said. "Right now there's no reason to believe we won't be open in April.
