Chihuahuas GM: Team name selected off of marketability, not votes

El Paso Chihuahuas management named the team based off of potential for marketability, not the number of votes the team name received, according to Brad Taylor, the team's general manager.
Taylor said the number of votes for each name weren't counted, but they were considered.
"In our opinion, this was the one that was most marketable, it has the most extensions, the most possibilities, and I think now that's what everyone is catching on to, and seeing this is fun and unique," Taylor said. "We tracked stuff, we didn't ever get bogged down in keeping track of [which name] was winning or losing. We were very clear that it was not a winner take all contest, we wanted everyone's contributions and ideas so we could process all them, put them to a marketing company, think about it, and find the different ways we can get to where we are today."
Taylor says one only has to look at the new team store downtown to find evidence of just how marketable the Chihuahuas are.
"The sales have been staggering, we've had to re-order, and overnight things here twice, after seven days, and we thought we had enough stuff to get us through the holidays and we didn't, which is a great problem," Taylor said. "The response has been phenomenal, not just here in El Paso, but nationally, I mean I think we're close to 40 states now, and different countries, so outside of El Paso, people are really responding to this fun, unique, creative brand."
Taylor noted there are several reasons why they feel the Chihuahuas are so marketable.
"It's a cool looking dog that looks good on a hat and kids will wear on a T-shirt," Taylor said. "It's a living character, it's a cute dog, it's also a dog that will back you into a corner and defend its turf, which is kind of fun cause it's a rough dog, it's a little dog."
KFOX14 asked if the Chihuahuas received a large portion of votes, even if it wasn't counted.
"It did, a lot of people don't believe it but it did," Taylor said.
Taylor told KFOX14 the next step for the team is creating and branding a mascot, a process team management says they will consider involving the community in once again.
