Pens Tie Game In Last Second, Beat Bruins In OT

Posted: 12:20 am MST November 15, 2009

(Sports Network) - Bill Guerin tied the contest with 0.4 seconds left in regulation and Pascal Dupuis netted the game-winner 1:24 into overtime, as the Pittsburgh Penguins rallied to edge the Boston Bruins, 6-5, at Mellon Arena.

Dupuis had a pair of goals for the Penguins, who snapped a four-game skid. Sidney Crosby had a goal and two assists. Jay McKee and Mark Eaton also lit the lamp Pittsburgh, which got All-Star center Evgeni Malkin back. Malkin, who had three assists, was sidelined for more than two weeks with a strained right shoulder. Brent Johnson stopped 28-of-33 shots for the victors.

"We didn't play the game we wanted to play. But you know what, we got out of here with a win. We needed a big win and it doesn't matter how we go it," said Dupuis.

Blake Wheeler, David Krejci, and Derek Morris each had a goal and an assist for the Bruins. Marco Sturm also scored for Boston, which got 27 saves from Tim Thomas.

"It's just an ugly ending," said Krejci. "We got to keep our heads up and get ready to play another game."

Down 4-3, Krejci lit the lamp on the power with 5:47 to play to deadlock the contest. Zdeno Chara's one-timer from the left point set up a rebound in front for Krejci, who wristed the disc into the back of the net. Sturm's tip-in with 2:29 remaining put the Bruins ahead 5-4.

After Guerin tied the game, Dupuis won it in OT. Thomas misplayed the puck behind his own net after the Penguins dumped the disc into the zone. Jordan Staal stole the puck from Thomas and slid a pass in front to Dupuis, who chipped the disc into the open net.

"I didn't shoot because we had a three-on-two and I saw Billy open. I passed it to him in just enough time," said Malkin, who assisted on Guerin's goal.

McKee lit the lamp just 1:42 into the first period to give the Penguins an early edge. Malkin, who was on his first shift, gathered a pass along the right boards at the Boston blue line. Malkin then slid a pass to a streaking McKee, whose backhander beat Thomas. Malkin was awarded his 100th career assist on the play.

Boston used a Wheeler score at the 8:29 mark to tie things up at one. Dupuis' goal with 3:36 to go gave Pittsburgh a 2-1 edge after one stanza.

The Bruins tied the contest at two just 3:33 into the second. Ryder stole the puck along the boards at the Penguins blue line before firing a wrister into the upper left-hand corner of the net.

Crosby broke a seven-game goalless streak when he found the back of the net at the 9:19 mark, giving Pittsburgh a 3-2 margin. However, Morris' wrister with 4:58 remaining deadlocked the game at three.

Eaton's second goal of the year put the Penguins ahead 4-3 with 11 minutes remaining in the third.
