DETROIT -- Longtime broadcaster Ernie Harwell, who spent 42 of his 55 years as a broadcaster calling Detroit Tigers games, has been diagnosed with incurable cancer. The 91-year-old Harwell, who was in the Tigers' broadcast booth from 1960 until he retired in 2002, remains upbeat after an inoperable tumor was found in the area of the bile duct, reported WDIV-TV in Detroit.Harwell was given a prognosis of one year, but said that doesn't get him down."I have no idea what the situation will be," said Harwell. "I just look forward to whatever is going to happen."Harwell said he went to the hospital early this year with concern over acid reflux. After numerous tests and procedures he learned that it was a more serious situation. But through it all, Harwell is upbeat."It's my confidence in God. Long ago, I gave my life to him. My life is in his hands," Harwell said.Harwell and his wife of 68 years, LuLu, said they are looking forward to the rest of their time together."She's got trust in God and Jesus," he said of his wife.Harwell was elected to the Baseball Hall of Fame in 1981 and the Sportscasters and Sportswriters Hall of Fame in 1989.
