Wounded Soldier's Mother's Identity Stolen

EL PASO, Texas —

Nearly a year after her son, Adrian Garcia, lost both his legs in Iraq, Lourdes Garcia is back at home in El Paso and ready to go back to work. Recently she discovered while she had been taking care of her wounded son, someone has taken her identity. " I'm mad. I mean, I feel mad. I feel worried. I feel confused. I mean, all I wanted to do was start working and I have the chance to start working and I thought I had the job. Now they can't hire me," Garcia said. Her former employer can't hire her back because her Social Security number is connected to the criminal background of the person who stole it. That person has been committing crimes under her name. Garcia tells KFOX she has no idea how anyone got her personal information. "I have never lost my purse. I don't have many credit cards. I don't use the Internet," she said. Eddie Peters helps victims of identity theft. He said for a trained criminal it doesn't take much. "Our information is in so many places. We are finding that you don't have to lose your wallet or purse anymore for someone to use it. We are talking name and address. A thief with the right skill level, that is all they need to be off with the races," he said. "I always heard about it like, don't use the internet to buy things because of identity theft. I never thought it could happen to me," Garcia said. Peters tells KFOX selling personal information is a lucrative business. "It is going to get a lot worse before it gets any better. We are in the information age. The thieves have found a better way to make money than even the drug trade. Our personal information is big bucks. It is a million-dollar industry. " "By all means it can happen to anyone at any time. A thief does not need anything but a warm body," Peters said. Experts estimate one out of every 700 identity thieves is being prosecuted. As for Garcia, investigators are expediting her case and she expects to start work early next week.
