Woman wants city to put crosswalk at central intersection after accident

EL PASO, Texas —

A daughter wants to see a crosswalk installed at an intersection where her mother was hit recently in Central El Paso.

"My son called me because he's still here and saidĀ 'Are you OK Mom? Are you sitting? Grandma's been in an accident. She's in the hospital. She's fine; she's alive,' " Marisela Gregory said.

Gregory broke into tears while describing the accident that her 68-year-old mother was in Aug. 18th while crossing at the intersection of Yandell Drive and Chelsea Street.

"She was coming from the Luby's, and she was about to cross at that intersection at Chelsea and Yandell. She was still on the sidewalk when the car that was coming this way bumped her and knocked her down," said Gregory.

Gregory rushed here from McAllen, Texas, to be with her mother.

"She's been walking her whole life and never had an accident. She just moved to this residence, and so I'm kind of seeing now and hearing from other people how it is a problem for people to cross here because there are no pedestrian lights or flashing lights," she said.

Gregory's mother lives in government housing for the elderly at the corner of Chelsea Street. Simon Najera is one of her neighbors and agrees that the intersection is dangerous and would like to see a crosswalk there.

"Almost all of the residents cross here. All of us go up to the store, and sometimes there's a lot of traffic, especially around 3 or 4, and so it makes it hard," said Najera.

Gregory's mother is in rehab now. Gregory will be staying with her until she's better, but she said she wants to see a crosswalk installed right away.

"I'd just like to make it safe for all these people, especially the elderly people. This is not the first accident from my understanding. It's not the first time it happens, but I would like her to be the last victim at this intersection," said Gregory.

KFOX14 contacted the city of El Paso about the intersection. Spokeswoman Tammy Ponce said she is checking to see if there has been any request made for a crosswalk at the intersection.

If there is request, a study would have been done to determine if the city would install a crosswalk.

Ponce confirmed there is a study underway and the city has decided to install a crosswalk.

The city is also looking at making other improvements but there is no set date on when work will beginĀ because the study is still underway.

Ponce said the city recieved an inquiry from a resident in the area that prompted the study.
