EL PASO, Texas —

KFOX 14 discovered the woman killed in a violent crash in the Lower Valley early Monday morning was arrested over a month ago for driving while intoxicated.

El Paso County Sheriff's officials confirmed they arrested Juana Muniz, 25, on Sept. 12 for DWI.

Thirty-three days after her arrest, Muniz and her boyfriend, Fernando Rodriguez, 26, were headed southbound on Zaragoza Street near the Gateway when the Hummer they were in ran a red light. A Honda Accord was struck.

Both Muniz and Rodriguez were ejected through the sun roof. Muniz died hours later. Police said alcohol and speed were believed to be the reasons for the crash.

Muniz worked as a bartender at the Palomino Tavern. Texas Alcoholic Beverage Commission officials said even with a DWI charge, Muniz would not have lost her serving license.

However, her driver's license was suspended. As with all DWI cases she was given a 45 day temporary license that would have allowed her to continue to drive.

El Paso Police have not determined if Muniz was behind the wheel even though she had a suspended license or, if due to the license suspension, Rodriguez was driving.

Muniz's DWI case was officially closed upon her death and before her first court date, which was scheduled for Oct. 23.
