EL PASO, Texas —

Yanira Caballero, 32, had not been seen for several days when friends and family decided to break into her Northeast El Paso duplex and look for her.

Martin Suarez said he and his father found Caballero dead inside her closet Monday night. Suarez said she was duct taped and her eyes were open. Her body had turned purple. Suarez's eyes welled up with tears as he told the story.

"She looked like she had been beaten or something," Suarez said. "Like she suffered or something, like someone did it."

Police notified Caballero's husband, Antonio (Tony) Tanez Brown, of his wife's death but he failed to come to her house. Police pulled Brown over on Interstate 10 in Las Cruces around midnight driving Caballero's 2005 Nissan Xterra.

Brown was arrested and charged with murder. His bond is set at $1 million.

"The only person she (Caballero) was having problems with was her husband," Suarez said.

Caballero's niece, Priscilla Ramos, and her mother, Carmen Caballero, spoke with KFOX14 News. Both said that Caballero and Brown had a normal marriage with good days and bad days.

"I don't know how he (Brown) could have done this," Ramos said. "I never, in a million years, thought he would do something like this to her and to us."

"They were just like a normal people," Caballero said.

The family said that Brown had stolen credit cards from Caballero and maxed them out. They said Caballero was preparing to leave Brown.

Suarez said Caballero would talk to him frequently about the fights she would get into with Brown. But Suarez said Caballero did not seem to fear for her life.

"She loved him and he loved her," Suarez said. "They'll fight one day and they'll get back together the next day."
