Woman blames street construction for damage to her car

By Bill Melugin

EL PASO, Texas —

A woman is blaming construction on a central El Paso street for casing her to crash and severely damage her car.

Alejandra Corrales told KFOX14 she was driving to class at the University of Texas at El Paso when her car slammed into a metal plate sticking out of the street near the intersection of Copia Street and Rosa Avenue.

"When I crashed, the metal hit my gas tank, and then all the gas leaked, and the airbags deployed," Corrales said. "It was a really hard-hit and it made a lot of noise. It scared me when smoke started coming out of the car."

Corrales said she was unable to avoid the metal plate because there was a car in the lane next to her.

A nearby business owner told KFOX14 that El Paso Water Utilities had been working on the street for the last several days.

Martin Bartlett from EPWU told KFOX14 that they had contracted a company called Texas Concrete to fix a water main break at that location.

Bartlett said that he is not sure who will be considered liable for the crash, but he advised that Corrales call the Houston-based company to figure that out.

"I filed a police report with an investigator to see who's responsible because it was their fault," Corrales said.

KFOX14 has been unable to get in contact with anyone from Texas Concrete at this time.
