Woman accused of lying about a baby's death to collect money talks

Iris Ramirez claims she is being threatened

By Veronica Macias

EL PASO, Texas —

A woman accused of lying about a baby's death to scam people for money tells KFOX14 News she collected the money for a friend but did have a baby who diedin early September.

Iris Ramirez, who goes by Daisa, spoke with KFOX14 News on Thursday and brought documents to prove she had a daughter who passed on Sept.4.

"I did it to help her, because I had already cremated my baby, and she needed more than I did. I didn't touch that money," said Ramirez.

However, KFOX14 could not find any information about her baby on the El Paso County's Birth Records website. La Paz Funeral Home, where Raminez claims her child was cremated, also has no record of a child named Midori Daiza Sanchez.

"I wouldn't have gone to the station if I didn't,"  said Ramirez who continued to claim she had a 5-month-old daughter who died from a heart condition.

New Mexico is a closed records state and KFOX14 could not verify her child's death.

As we reported last week, several car clubs organized a car show at the Cowtown Boots. Money raised from the car show was collected to help Ramirez pay for funeral services.

People from the car clubs said they began to ask Ramirez about the funeral service and accuse her of avoiding them.

Ramirez collected $1,600 according to Cohension, a car club that organized the car show for her.

Ramirez said she is going to repay that money that was collected to give to her. She claimed that she never used any of that money and gave it to a friend named Melissa Medrano.

KFOX-14 attempted to contact Medrano at an address listed for her but no one was available at the home.
