Winter Returns To Borderland

EL PASO, Texas —

Winds have come through both Las Cruces and El Paso, bringing with them cooler temperatures.

Although the area did see unusually warm weather throughout December, this is not the first cold front we have experienced. But, it could be the first to drop temperatures into the teens.

Wind gusts began Wednesday and were consistent throughout the night into Thursday morning. They are expected to pick back up and come in strong midday, going up to 70mph. A high wind advisory will be in effect for both Las Cruces and El Paso from 10 a.m to 8 p.m today.

The winter weather is stirring up some mixed emotions from residents.

Some, like Juan Ramirez who lives in Northeast El Paso, are enjoying it. “It’s good to get some cold weather better. It's always hot in El Paso, its feel good to get some cold weather."

This is not the first time and possibly not the last the El Paso area will see this type of weather. The month of December started off with cold temperatures.

“I pulled out my winter gear about two or three weeks ago. I am prepared," Ramirez said.

Throughout the month the area also had some unusually high temperatures, the sudden change, leaving others not as prepared.

“I am kind of surprised, I guess,” said Randy Ribera of central El Paso. “ I mean, it is about to be the New Years. I thought the cold air was pretty much gone. I just didn't think it was going to get this cold.”

The winter weather will last into the New Year and both residents said they will be breaking out some extra layers.

“Long johns, long sleeves and jackets," said Ramirez.

Ribera has a young son and is going to make sure he stays warm with “jackets, sweaters, some beanies and little gloves," he said.

There is a possibility for rain and flurries throughout the week.
