Windy Weather Affects Wine Festival

LA UNION, New Mexico —

The La Vina Winery Festival is an annual event that deals with whatever weather this time of year brings. In years past the weather might be rain or cold, but this year, it's the wind.

"Yesterday was great. Last night about the middle of the night it started getting windy, and it stayed that way really bad until about 11, 12 o'clock," said Gary Strein, owner of Silver Wears.

Strein said when he came to the winery to open up shop, the wind had done some damage to other vendors.

"Unfortunately some of the ones had their tents out in the parking lots this morning and other people's booths and stuff," Strein told KFOX.

The Delicious Mexican Express tent fell victim to the wind.

"It was folded this way, and that's why they tied it on to the tree so hopefully it doesn't fly away," said owner Ray Borrego.

While ropes held down the tent, jalapeno and nacho cheese cans kept the tablecloths from flying away.

As far as people coming to the festival, many were concerned about the windy conditions.

"We came here to see the live music and we were thinking is it going to get dusty, blow over the tents over there, is it going to blow over some of the displays," said Gabriel Vaughan from East El Paso.

Vaughan kept her jacket and scarf on, not typical end of April weather, and it is the weather that may have kept some from coming to the festival on Sunday.

"Yeah, I think the weather has a big effect on whether people will make an appearance or not," said Cheryl Summers from Detroit, Mich.
