LAS CRUCES, N.M. —

Due to the strong winds the visibility throughout southern New Mexico has been horrible and calling for the Department of Transportation to close many major roadways including highway-11 from Deming to Columbus and US-180 from Deming to Silver City. As conditions worsened, the westbound lanes of I-10 were closed from Las Cruces to Lordsburg.

“Makes the visibility low, you know shutting down the highways kind of makes us stuck here,” said Jacob Monje of Mesilla.

East of Las Cruces, White Sands Missile Range reported several windows being blown in, one downed power line and employees had to be let off early in case the San Augustine pass were to be closed.

“I work over there at White Sands Missle Range and coming back down was just aweful. Lots and lots of headaches,” said Janelle Arzabal of Dona Ana.

Just off of I-25 near Radium Springs the winds actually blew off a billboard.

“The wind grabbed it and dropped the logo sign about halfway down the hill close to the interstate,” said Gilbert Ruiz from the NM Department of Transportation. “If it would've landed on the interstate we could've had something serious.”

And it wasn't just southern New Mexico that saw extreme winds. About 90 4th graders from East Picacho Elementary were in Albuquerque for a field trip and were supposed to be back in Las Cruces by 2:30 pm. However since the winds were so strong they found themselves stuck in Los Lunas.

“At this point the kids are actually doing some art lessons courtesy of the Los Lunas Public Schools and they're being hosted by that school district and they’re in a teacher resource area,” said Las Cruces Public Schools spokeswoman Jo Galvan. “They’re going to be fed dinner and we don't expect they'll headed back probably until 9 pm.”

Just before 6 pm LCPS officials decided to keep the kids in Los Lunas overnight. The Las Cruces Public Schools will be posting the buses' departure on-line, click here.
