White Sands Keeps Research Lab

In a victory for Southern New Mexico, the Base Realignment and Closure Commission has voted to keep the Army Research Laboratory at White Sands, and not move it to Aberdeen, Maryland.

Community leaders, base employees and New Mexico politicians all rallied for support of the secret lab, and the BRAC committee agreed that moving it would not be in the best interest of the military or contractors.

Moving the lab would have cost the community 13 military and 165 civilian jobs.

The Las Cruces-White Sands community also argued that moving the lab would have resulted in the loss of 200-million dollars to the local economy.
