Weeds Invading Borderland; Residents Want Help Getting Rid Of Them

EL PASO, Texas —

A ditch in the Lower Valley is a sea of weeds and brush like most drainage canals, but the problem with that one is that it divides one large apartment complex on Betel Drive.

"My concern is that there's a lot of flies, mosquitoes, who knows maybe drugs, needles. Who knows what's in there, kids play in there and they might get infected," said Teresa La Borde.

La Borde along with other residents of La Privada Apartments said they want someone to get rid of the weeds. At first there was confusion when they called a city department and they said it wasn't their job. Then the residents called the new Storm Water division but they said they're not sure when they can get to it.

"It's their job, they should do it. If they're charging the residents some money to have it cleaned they should do it," said La Borde.

Lupe Jaramillo who lives on 306 Guadalajara in the Lower Valley has a similar problem. The property next door to her has overgrown weeds and she says the mosquitoes are unbearable on her two sons.

"I called vector control about five times," said Jaramillo.

She said she hasn't seen anyone spraying or fogging in her neighborhood, but she spotted this noticed by the department of environmental services on the door. The spokesperson for that department said they could get a court order to enter the property and clean it at the owner's expense. But all these residents share one thing in common, local government can't move as quickly as they would like them to.

"Do it fast, ASAP. I mean kids can get sick, I can get sick," said La Borde.

A spokeswoman for Water Utilities said storm water crews are working on a ditch nearby and they're making their way to the one the residents are complaining about. The reason why they're moving so slowly is because the rain is making the weeds grow faster than the crews can work.
